Caring For Small Pets During Winter

The recent cold snap has made it clear that winter has well and truly arrived. As we wrap up in extra layers, hats, scarves and gloves, and enjoy those crisp, cold days, it’s important to remember that our small pets feel the chill too. Taking a few extra steps now can help ensure they stay comfortable and cosy throughout the colder months.

Our team vet, Dr Lucy Robson, has shared her top tips for keeping bunnies and guinea pigs happy and warm during winter.

Dr Lucy commented, “Rabbits are better suited to colder climates compared to the heat, but considerations must be made to their surroundings to ensure a gradual adaptation to the cooler months.”

How to care for Rabbits & Guinea Pigs during Winter

  1. Ensure your bunnies and guinea pigs’ enclosures are draught-free and waterproof. Provide a cosy bedding area with plenty of warm, soft bedding such as barley straw bedding.
  2. Regularly check their water bowls to ensure the water is not frozen. To prevent water from freezing, wrap pet-friendly insulation materials around their bowl or water bottle.
  3. An ample supply of hay should be provided. This can not only act as additional bedding, but it will also help to provide the calories your bunny or guinea pig needs to keep their body temperature at an optimum level.
  4. Companionship is a right to both rabbits and guinea pigs, and nothing keeps them cosy like the heat of another fluffy body!
  5. Certain breeds of animals, such as skinny pigs, are NOT suitable for outdoor living, and any animal that has had any veterinary care resulting in shaved fur should be kept indoors until recovered, unless advised otherwise by a vet.
